NOTE: THE ORIGINAL ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE TEXT HAS BEEN VERY SLIGHTLY MODERNIZED
PARA 1
"Were there gypsies in the plantation at the time?" |
PARA 2
"Yes, there are nearly always some there." |
— Oui, il y en a presque toujours. |
—Sí, casi siempre hay algunos. |
»Jawohl; es sind fast immer einige da.« |
PARA 3
"Ah, and what did you gather from this allusion to a band — a speckled band?" |
PARA 4
"Sometimes I have thought that it was merely the wild talk of delirium, sometimes that it may have referred to some band of people, perhaps to these very gypsies in the plantation. I do not know whether the spotted handkerchiefs which so many of them wear over their heads might have suggested the strange adjective which she used." |
..................... 'I thought at first that it was the simple result of delirium, since it could have been a band of people...' |
.................. ~Sentido = [sense/ meaning/ consciousness/ direction(as in road)/ sensitive] ~Pañuelos = [handkerchiefs/ shawls/ scarfs} ~Término = [term/ expression i.a.] |
PARA 5
Holmes shook his head like a man who is far from being satisfied. |
....................... ~Meneó = III pers sing (él/ella/usted) PRETERITO, menear [to shake/ to sway/ to wiggle/ to wag], HERE: 'shook' |
PARA 6
"These are very deep waters," said he; "please go on with your narrative." |
— Cela me paraît bien mystérieux ! dit-il. Continuez votre récit, je vous prie. .................... 'This seems to me to be very mysterious!' |
—Nos movemos en aguas muy profundas —dijo—. Por favor, continúe con su narración. .................. 'We move in very deep waters...' |
'we wander/grope completely in the dark...' |
PARA 7
"Two years have passed since then, and my life has been until lately lonelier than ever. A month ago, however, a dear friend, whom I have known for many years, has done me the honour to ask my hand in marriage. His name is Armitage — Percy Armitage — the second son of Mr. Armitage, of Crane Water, near Reading. My stepfather has offered no opposition to the match, and we are to be married in the course of the spring. |
PARA 8
"Two days ago some repairs were started in the west wing of the building, and my bedroom wall has been pierced, so that I have had to move into the chamber in which my sister died, and to sleep in the very bed in which she slept. Imagine, then, my thrill of terror when last night, as I lay awake, thinking over her terrible fate, I suddenly heard in the silence of the night the low whistle which had been the herald of her own death. I sprang up and lit the lamp, but nothing was to be seen in the room. |
.................. ~Agujerear = INFINITIVO, [to pierce] ~Acostada = [laid down/ bedded ((however, 'being laid down but awake' is not good English even if it is the literal translation)) ~Suave = [soft/ gentle/ smooth/ light i.a.] |
PARA 9
I was too shaken to go to bed again, however, so I dressed, and as soon as it was daylight I slipped down, got a dog-cart at the Crown Inn, which is opposite, and drove to Leatherhead, from whence I have come on this morning with the single objective of seeing you and asking your advice." |
......................... ~Posada = [inn/ lodging] ~Plantarse = THINK: PLANT ONESELF. ie [stand firm, stand planted, put onself somewhere] and thus in a card game: [stick]. However, in this story is seen a demonstration of a colloquial use where the metephore gets streched: [get somewhere fast] |
PARA 10
"You have done wisely," said my friend. "But have you told me all?" |
— Vous avez bien fait, répondit mon ami. Mais m’avez-vous tout dit ? |
PARA 11
"Yes, all." |
— Oui, tout. |
—Sí, todo. |
»Gewiß, alles.« |
PARA 12
"Miss Roylott, you have not. You are protecting your stepfather." |
..................... Encubriendo = GERUNDIO, encubrir [to cover up/ to hide/ to conceal/ to mask/ to cover up for] HERE: 'covering up for' |
PARA 13
"Why, what do you mean?" |
— Quoi ? que voulez-vous dire ? |
—¿Cómo? ¿Qué quiere decir? |
»Warum? Was wollen Sie damit sagen?« |
PARA 14
For answer Holmes pushed back the frill of black lace which fringed the hand that lay upon our visitor's knee. Five little livid spots, the marks of four fingers and a thumb, were printed upon the white wrist. |
((There's a bit missing here. Now where the f*** did I put it?)) |
.................... ~Respuesta = [response/ answer/ reply] ~Encaje = [lace/ fitting/ flexibility]. also a form of encajar ~Puño = [cuff/ fist/ handle] ~Muñeca = [wrist/ doll/ babe] ~Moretones = [bruises] ~Pulgar = [thumb/ big toe] |
PARA 15
"You have been treated cruelly," said Holmes. |
— Il vous a traitée brutalement, dit Holmes. |
—La han tratado con brutalidad —dijo Holmes. |
»Sie sind mißhandelt worden,« sagte Holmes. |
