NOTE: THE ORIGINAL ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE TEXT HAS BEEN VERY SLIGHTLY MODERNIZED
PARA 1
"I have(1) seen(2) the(3) will(4) of(5) the(6) deceased(7) wife," said he. "To determine its exact meaning I have been obliged to work out the present prices of the investments with which it is concerned. The total income, which at the time of the wife's death was little short of 1100 pounds, is now, through the fall in agricultural prices, not more than 750 pounds. Each daughter can claim an income of 250 pounds, in case of marriage. It is evident, therefore, that if both girls had married, this buffoon would have had a mere pittance, while even one of them would cripple him to a very serious extent. |
....................... ~Fallecida = [deceased/ late] ~Precios = [price/ fare (as in ride)/ rate (as in per hour/day etc)] ~Inversiones = [investment/ inversion/ reversal] ~Descenso = [drop (as in reduction)/ fall (ditto)/ descent/ relegation] ~Contraer = INFINITIVO [to contract (as in to shrink)/to contract (as in to make a.../ to contract (as in to catch an illness)/ to contract (as in words)] NOTE: this spanish verb fits exactly the english verb which is damn rare in linguistics. ~Por lo tanto = [thus, therefore/ hence/ consequently i.a.] ~Se hubieran casado = PLUSCUAMPERFECTO DE SUBJUNTIVO, casarse [to get married i.a.] HERE: 'had married' or 'would have married' are close enough. payaso = [clown] ((bet you thought it meant farmer/ peasant)) ~Estar a dos velas = basically means to be out of resources (or skint if you like) its literal meaning is to be left with only two candles/sails as velas can mean both. There are many theories as to where this saying comes from. One is that it refers to a ship only making it home having only two sails left after a storm. Another, that it concerns the custom of leaving two candles burning in a church at the end of religious services. Before reading the spanish sources I always thought it was just simply that, before electric lighting, you knew you was in trouble when you only had two candles left and no money to buy more. Sometimes simpler is better! ~Bajón = [brusque fall (as in diminution)/ sharp drop (ditto)/ depression (as in mood)/ comedown/ anticlimax] |
................... ~Willensmeinung = [ |
PARA 2
"My morning's work(1) has(2) not been(3) wasted, since it has proved that he has the very strongest motives for standing in the way of anything of the sort. And now, Watson, this is too serious for dawdling, especially as the old man is aware that we are interesting ourselves in his affairs; so if you are ready, we shall call a cab and drive to Waterloo. I should be very much obliged if you would slip your revolver into your pocket. An Eley's No. 2 is an excellent argument with gentlemen who can twist steel pokers into knots. That and a tooth-brush are, I think all that we need." |
......................... ~Nudo = [knot (Root Meaning)/ junction/ hub/ lump (as in throat)/ heart (as in 'of the matter')/ crux(ditto) / climax (as in play/film etc] ~Cepillo = [brush/ plane (as in carpinter's) |
'my morning was also well used. I have now the evidence in hand...' |
PARA 3
At Waterloo we were fortunate in catching a train for Leatherhead, where we hired a trap* at the station inn and drove for four or five miles through the lovely Surrey lanes. It was a perfect day, with a bright sun and a few fleecy clouds in the heavens. The trees and wayside hedges were just throwing out their first green shoots, and the air was full of the pleasant smell of the moist earth. |
....................... ~Posada = [inn/ lodging] ~Algodonosas = [cottony] ~Algodón = [cotton] ~Seto = [hedge] ~Brote = [shoot (as in plant)/ sucker (ditto)/ sprout (but not as in brussels)] [outbreak/ eruption] ~Olía = I+III pers sing (yo/el/ella/usted) IMPERFECTO, oler [to smell/ to smell of i.a.] HERE: 'was smelling of' or 'smelt of' ~Mojada = [wet/ soaked/ drenched/ saturated/ slushy/ sloppy] |
PARA 4
To me at least there was a strange contrast between the sweet promise of the spring and this sinister quest upon which we were engaged. My companion sat in the front of the trap*, his arms folded, his hat pulled down over his eyes, and his chin sunk upon his breast, buried in the deepest thought. Suddenly, however, he started, tapped me on the shoulder, and pointed over the meadows |
.......................... ~Sumido = [immersed/ plunged/ sunk] ~Sumir = [to sink/ to plunge/ to become lost in (as in thought)] ~Incorporarse = [to join up/ to sign up for/ to enlist] [to sit up/ to sit up straight] ~Golpecito = [blow/ tap] ~Prado = [field/ meadow/ lawn] |
PARA 5
"Look there!" said he. |
— Regardez, dit-il. |
—¡Mire allá! —dijo. |
|
PARA 6
A heavily timbered park stretched up in a gentle slope, thickening into a grove at the highest point. From amid the branches there jutted out the gray gables and high ridge-line of a very old mansion. |
....................... ~Cerrado = THINK: CLOSED = Of a person [closed-minded/ strict/ immovable/ private/ shy], of an accent [thick], of a beard/forest [thick/ bushy], of a sky [overcast] ~Cerrar = [to close i.a.] ~Sobresalir = [stand out/ tower over/ project] Frontón = [gable/ facade/ pediment] [pelota court] [wide forehead] |
PARA 7
"Stoke Moran?" said he. |
— Stoke Moran ? dit-il. |
—¿Stoke Moran? —preguntó. |
»Stoke Moran?«, fragte er. |
PARA 8
"Yes, sir, that be the house of Dr. Grimesby Roylott," remarked the driver. |
»Jawohl, Herr, das ist Dr. Grimesby Roylotts Haus«, erwiderte der Fahrer. |
PARA 9
"There is some building going on there," said Holmes; "that is where we are going." |
—Veo que están haciendo obras —dijo Holmes—. Es allí donde vamos. |
»Wo der Umbau gemacht wird? Das ist unser Ziel.« |
PARA 10
"There's the village," said the driver, pointing to a cluster of roofs some distance to the left; "but if you want to get to the house, you'll find it shorter to get over this stile, and so by the foot-path over the fields. There it is, where the lady is walking." |
PARA 11
"And the lady, I fancy, is Miss Stoner," observed Holmes, shading his eyes. "Yes, I think we had better do as you suggest." |
...................... ~Dicho/dicha = [the said/ the aforesaid] |
PARA 12
We got off, paid our fare, and the trap rattled back on its way to Leatherhead. |
.................... ~Nos apeamos = I pers sing (nosotros) PRETERITO, apearse [to alight/ to get of/ to get out] ~Traqueteando = GERUNDIO, traquetear [to shake/ to rattle/ to bang about/ to jolt/ to bang], HERE: jolting about |
PARA 13
"I thought it as well," said Holmes as we climbed the stile, "that this fellow should think we had come here as architects, or on some definite business. It may stop his gossip. Good afternoon, Miss Stoner. You see that we have been as good as our word." |
PARA 14
Our client of the morning had hurried forward to meet us with a face which spoke her joy. |
Mit offener Herzlichkeit kam unsere Schutzbefohlene uns entgegengelaufen. |
PARA 15
"I have been waiting so eagerly for you," she cried, shaking hands with us warmly. "All has turned out splendidly. Dr. Roylott has gone to town, and it is unlikely that he will be back before evening." |
........................ Anochecer (as noun) = [nightfall/ dusk/ twighlight] NOTE: this is also a verb in its infinitive form which has the meaning much the same as the noun: [to get dark/ to become night] |
